Through the Eyes of the Girl with the Pearl

Art Therapy for Women and Children in Kahramanmaras After the Earthquake. The project “Through the Eyes of the Girls with the Pearl” has been realized in collaboration with the Foundation NP2E and the Kahramanmaraş Down Syndrome Association, with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Türkiye. This special project aims to support the mental well-being of individuals who have undergone challenging experiences by harnessing the power of art, while simultaneously underscoring the significance of this endeavor.

The primary goal of our project is to exhibit a sensitive approach to the psychological effects caused by the earthquake, while strengthening the spirit of solidarity within the community and extending a helping hand to affected women and children. Through art therapy, the project aspires to contribute to their emotional healing.

The primary target group is women affected by the earthquake. Let’s not forget that women make up the largest group of victims during natural disasters: 70% to 90% of the fatalities. The main item of this project is a gigantic patchwork of ‘The Girl With The Pearl’ that the women have created. In ‘The Year of Vermeer,’ we found it most appropriate that this patchwork travels to different locations in Türkiye and the Netherlands, serving as a tribute to all women who have lost their lives in natural disasters. May it inspire other aid workers to undertake similar activities.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all participants and supporters who have played pivotal roles in this undertaking. As we come together to strengthen societal solidarity, we acknowledge the profound value inherent in this collaborative effort.
