A Tribute to Female Resilience at the Council of Europe!
Marking 100 years of friendship between The Netherlands and Türkiye, which coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, we were honored to co-inaugurate the exhibition “Through the Eyes of the Girl with a Pearl Earring”. This moving exhibition is the culmination of a poignant project reflecting the resilience and solidarity of women affected by the devastating earthquake in Kahramanmaraş. The exhibition, brought to Strasbourg through the kind invitation of Ambassador Tanja GONGGRIJP of the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was officially opened on November 27th.
This meaningful occasion has been a great opportunity to spotlight the extraordinary initiative created by women, for women, and through women, highlighting the importance of gender-responsive approaches to healing and recovery. The initiative’s impact has resonated far and wide, with the exhibition traveling across Türkiye, including a significant moment in Kahramanmaraş at the opening of the EXPO Center. The monumental embroidery was also showcased in Istanbul, Ankara, and internationally at the municipality of Amsterdam, emphasizing the global significance of this remarkable project. Building on this momentum, the exhibition is set to continue its journey in the coming year, fostering dialogue and drawing much-needed attention to the vital roles of women in addressing and recovering from natural disasters.
The exhibition stems from an art therapy project implemented in Kahramanmaraş in the aftermath of the earthquake. Designed to promote healing and emotional recovery through creative expression, the initiative addresses the harsh reality that women are disproportionately affected by natural disasters worldwide.
During their artistic journey, the women formed a deep connection with The Girl with the Pearl Earring, who became their silent witness. Through their art, they shared their sorrows, tears, laughter, and even songs. Their story is one of strength, resilience, and solidarity—not despair.
Beyond creating art, these women have woven a legacy of friendship and unity between the Netherlands and Turkiye that will inspire future generations for another century.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Dutch Embassy in Ankara for funding this project and for their engagement beyond financial support. Special thanks also go to the Dutch and Turkish Permanent Representatives to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Tanja GONGGRIJP and ambassador Nurdan BAYRAKTAR GOLDER, for their dedication to this initiative. We further extend our thanks to the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Despina CHATZIVASSILIOU-TSOVILIS and the distinguished guests whose presence enriched the opening ceremony.
This initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of art and solidarity!
